Grilling Old School

Propane gas grills are increasingly common in the grilling world.  And let’s face it, they offer a lot of advantages in speed and convenience.  However, for the grilling purist like myself, there’s nothing like a charcoal grill.

Whether you don’t see the point in going out into the woods without a camping charcoal grill or you feel your pre-game activities are enhanced by a tailgating charcoal grill, there are arguments to be made.  For starters, charcoal imports that amazing smoky flavor into food – as long as you don’t overdo it on the lighter fluid – that a gas grill just can’t match.  People who aren’t good at relaxing comment on the heating time for the coals, but no one ever complains about the taste.

Along with flavor that can’t be beat are prices that make sense in this economy.  Charcoal grills, with their wonderfully uncomplicated innards, not only cost far less than gas, but they have very few fiddly moving parts.  In fact, camping charcoal grills can be just as easily set up over a fire pit as over coals, meaning that you have that many more options and that much less to pack in and out.

Personally, I find them ideal for tailgating.  Charcoal tailgating grills can come in the “rebel grill” size, which stakes into the ground and conveniently provides its own perch for a solid amount of food.  Because I’m not hauling around a propane tank, even the backyard-sized “Char-Broil American” can be set up almost anywhere to enhance my party and feed my friends in style.  Not to mention that I can buy charcoal almost anywhere so that the event isn’t ruined if I’ve forgotten to fill up my cumbersome propane tank.
